A laser igniter is a solid state photonic device that delivers a focused, high energy pulse of light directly into the combustion chamber to initiate ignition.

Unlike a spark plug, there is no arc, no electrodes, and no physical contact between the ignition source and the fuel air mixture. Early experimental prototypes built in the 1990s used bulky, inefficient gas lasers, but modern production laser igniters are monolithic solid state devices, small enough to directly replace a spark plug in almost any existing engine design, with no major modification required.

How Does Laser Ignition Work?

The operation of a laser igniter is both simple and profoundly clever, and most popular explanations miss the single most important feature of the technology.

A conventional spark plug creates ignition at the tip of its electrodes, right at the edge of the combustion chamber. The arc heats a tiny volume of gas, which then has to propagate outwards across the entire cylinder. A laser igniter works very differently. First, a low power solid state laser diode generates a nanosecond duration pulse of near infrared light. This pulse is collimated and passed through a fused silica lens built into the tip of the igniter. The lens focuses the beam down to an extremely precise focal point, that can be positioned anywhere inside the combustion chamber.

At that focal point, the intensity of the light is so great that it causes non-linear optical breakdown of the air fuel mixture. The gas is instantly ionized, creating a plasma kernel that is orders of magnitude hotter and more energetic than a spark arc. Critically, this kernel can be placed exactly where an engineer wants ignition to occur, not just right next to the cylinder wall. That single fact is responsible for almost all of the technology’s most dramatic advantages.

What Is A 100 Watt Laser Igniter?

First it is important to clarify the most commonly misquoted and misunderstood specification. The 100W rating refers to average optical output power, not peak pulse power. Each individual pulse from a modern 100W laser igniter has a peak power of approximately 120 megawatts, delivered over a 1.2 nanosecond pulse.

Modern production units are monolithic fibre coupled solid state devices built on gallium nitride diode technology. Contrary to almost all popular assumptions, they are exactly the same physical form factor as a standard industrial M18 spark plug. They screw directly into any existing engine, with zero modification required.

Below 80W average output, laser igniters are broadly just a better spark plug. Above 80W, they cross a threshold where they gain capabilities that were previously considered theoretically impossible.

Current Applications Of Laser Ignition

While laser ignition is often presented as a technology of the distant future, it is already in widespread commercial use today. The largest current deployment is in stationary natural gas reciprocating engines used for utility scale power generation. Almost every new large scale gas engine launched since 2022 has offered laser ignition as a standard or optional system.

They are also now the default ignition system for most new industrial gas turbines, particularly those designed to operate on hydrogen or low calorific value fuels. Laser igniters are the only ignition system that can reliably ignite pure hydrogen without pre ignition or backfire, a property that has made them a critical enabling technology for the global hydrogen energy transition.
